Professor Ian Walker's research on motonormativity explores how societal norms and expectations around car use shape both transportation behaviour and policy.
Pan Channel Island community initiative, The Better Journeys Project are delighted to have secured Professor Ian Walker from the University of Swansea for a seminar exploring the psychology of transport choice and transport policy, kindly hosted at the Guernsey Chamber of Commerce.
He highlights how car-centric cultures often marginalize alternative modes of transport, such as cycling or public transit, reinforcing dependency on cars. Walker examines the psychological, social, and infrastructural factors that perpetuate this bias, including urban planning, media representation, and policy decisions. His work advocates for rethinking transportation systems to prioritize sustainability, equity, and safety, challenging the dominance of car culture. By addressing motonormativity, Walker aims to promote more inclusive and environmentally friendly mobility solutions, encouraging a shift away from car dependency toward diverse, accessible transportation options.
